A Akatori Atlas

Akatori beginner guide — what to know before the August 5 launch

Akatori launches on Steam on August 5, 2026, with consoles following on August 12. Until then, the reliable preparation is the confirmed core loop — staff combat, momentum traversal and five interconnected worlds — not unverified builds or routes.

Is Akatori out yet?

Not quite. Akatori is a 2.5D metroidvania from developer Contrast Games, and as of July 26, 2026 it is in the final stretch before release. The dates below come from the developer’s launch announcement (via Gematsu) and the official Steam page.

PlatformRelease dateStatus
PC (Steam)August 5, 2026Confirmed on the Steam page
PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox OneAugust 12, 2026Confirmed in the launch announcement
Nintendo Switch 22027Announced, no date yet

Price has not been published — the Steam page is wishlist-only right now. The PC version lists English, Russian and French interface and subtitles, single-player only, with Steam Achievements and Cloud support.

The confirmed core loop

You play as Mako, a teenage girl raised in the Firebird Temple, travelling across worlds to stop the Amber Storms — a corrupting force that also produces the amber crystals fueling the game’s civilization. A mysterious red bird is sealed inside her staff.

That staff is the whole game in one item. Officially, it is a weapon (ground and aerial combos, throw and recall), a traversal tool (gliding from heights, sliding down slopes, wall-hooking) and a key to “tricky mechanisms and secret places.” The Steam page confirms you unlock staff abilities over time — we track every shown move on the abilities page.

Two more confirmed pillars shape how the game will actually feel:

  • Five unique worlds, each with its own biome, story and challenges — see map progression for what is known about the structure.
  • Living enemy ecosystems: the developer states enemies fight each other, trigger traps and react to environmental hazards, with over 20 regular enemy types plus unique bosses. Boss variety includes rhythm-based battles, underwater escape sequences and multi-phase fights.

What the demo tells you about the first hour

The pre-launch Steam demo (February 2026, ahead of Steam Next Fest) is the best public preview of the opening. Per press coverage of the demo, it ran about 45 minutes across three areas:

  1. Monk Forest — teaches basic movement and combat.
  2. A vertical bamboo zone — built around glider traversal and stalk navigation.
  3. An underwater section — breath-limited exploration with environmental hazards.

The demo also included a Chaos Arena challenge, a chase sequence against a giant Serpent, and a boss fight against the Bumblebee. Whether these exact areas open the full game in the same order is not yet verified — treat the demo as a mechanics preview, not a guaranteed route.

Practical takeaways: expect momentum-based platforming to matter as much as combat, expect light and charged attacks plus the staff throw from very early on, and expect verticality — the demo’s second area was explicitly about gliding.

How to prepare before launch day

There is no meaningful “pre-grind” for a single-player metroidvania, so preparation is mostly practical:

  • Check your PC against the listed requirements. Minimum: Intel Core i3-6100, 6 GB RAM, GeForce GT 740 (2 GB), 10 GB storage. Recommended: i5-3470, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050 or Radeon R9 380. These are from the Steam page and may change at launch.
  • Wishlist rather than pre-judge. No user reviews exist yet; press impressions of the demo were positive (Kotaku and PC Gamer pull-quotes appear on the Steam page), but that is not the full game.
  • Play with a controller if you can. The demo supported both controller and keyboard; the Steam tags lean heavily on precision platforming.
  • Skim the confirmed systems first. Reading the abilities overview and the world structure notes before launch beats memorising anyone’s speculative build.

What we deliberately do not list yet

Akatori is unreleased, so this site does not publish damage numbers, drop locations, boss weaknesses, upgrade costs, “best builds” or ending explanations — none of that exists in any official material yet. Anything you see elsewhere claiming otherwise is speculation or extrapolated from a 45-minute demo. These pages will be re-checked against the release build after August 5, 2026, and each page shows its own last-checked date.
