Akatori staff forms and abilities database — confirmed functions
Confirmed Akatori staff functions, combat and resource mechanics, with demo evidence separated from release-build facts and no invented weapon-form roster.
Akatori's red bird becomes Mako's staff, a weapon and traversal tool. Public sources confirm gliding, sliding, attacks, Dodge, Energy and a separate underwater Breath meter; a complete staff-form roster and release unlock order are not confirmed.

Database boundary: “staff forms” does not mean an invented weapon tree
Akatori’s official description says a mysterious red bird is sealed in, and can transform into, Mako’s staff. The staff is both a weapon and an exploration tool. That supports a bird-to-staff transformation, but it does not support claims about spear, blade, hammer or elemental forms. Until Contrast Games publishes a form list, “staff forms” in this database means confirmed functional roles, not speculative weapons.
Rune search boundary
“Akatori rune” is a useful search variant for the staff and abilities topic, but it is not a confirmed feature name in the official material checked here. The sources document staff abilities, traversal functions, Energy, Breath and Internal Chaos; they do not publish rune slots, passive runes, rune drops or a rune build. This page therefore routes the query to confirmed staff/ability evidence and leaves the rune system unclaimed.

Publicly confirmed combat actions
The June 29 demo update provides a dated first-party mechanical record, while the current Steam store confirms the released game exists. The update confirms basic attacks, a charged attack with a wind-up, and a Dodge ability. The patch allows Mako to turn during charged-attack wind-up and changes Dodge so it includes a counterattack. It also says combat was rebalanced, so damage or timings from an older demo footage should not be treated as current data.
The staff can be used against more than 20 regular enemy types and several unique bosses, according to the full-game store page. However, official text does not publish input strings, hit counts, damage, stagger, invulnerability frames or boss weakness tables. Those columns remain intentionally empty.
Energy, Breath and the Internal Chaos loop
The latest demo patch separates three ideas that older guides may blur together:
- Energy: automatic regeneration was reduced, while basic attacks now build Energy much faster.
- Breath: underwater breathing no longer consumes Energy; it has its own Breath resource and low-air HUD warning.
- Internal Chaos: a separate story-mechanic document says confrontation with enemies produces Internal Chaos. It is focused in Manipura, moved to the Bell of Harmony through physical impact, and opens a portal to “virtuality,” where projections of chaos are destroyed to consolidate memory.
The Internal Chaos post is written as in-world instructions. It confirms names and sequence, but not button inputs, numeric costs or whether every step appears in the public demo. This database therefore labels the loop confirmed in official documentation, not universally playable in every build.
Traversal and environmental interaction
Gliding, sliding and mechanisms are full-game features. The demo patch adds harder evidence about the public slice: bamboo mechanics were completely reworked and gained a tutorial; airborne behavior and wall-grab issues were reworked; underwater Breath became independent. Together, those facts show the staff’s movement role extends beyond a single “jump higher” upgrade.
Do not infer an unlock order from this table. The game promises five worlds and progressive staff abilities, but no official source assigns Glide, Slide or any other function to a specific world. The map progression guide tracks that boundary.
Demo availability and release-build boundary
Contrast Games announced that the Steam demo would be disabled July 22 because the game was nearing completion. Steam should not be presented as a currently downloadable demo. Separately, Microsoft’s official Xbox page still lists Akatori Demo as free, with Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and handheld compatibility. That listing is evidence for the Xbox build, not evidence that Steam access returned. Regional storefront availability can differ.
What release-build verification must add
This page still needs release-build tests for inputs, exact unlock points, form count, Energy costs, counter timing, Breath duration, mechanism gates and version notes. Until those tests are complete, treat it as a source-backed function database rather than a complete move encyclopedia. “Staff forms” is a search phrase here, not evidence that a named multi-weapon roster has been published.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Akatori have multiple staff forms?
- Official text confirms the mysterious red bird transforms into Mako's staff. It does not publish a list of multiple weapon forms, so this page will not invent one.
- What changed in the latest public demo build?
- The June patch reduced automatic Energy regeneration, made basic attacks build Energy faster, allowed turning during charged wind-up, added a counterattack to Dodge and separated Breath from Energy underwater.
- Can I still play the Akatori demo?
- The developer disabled the Steam demo on July 22, 2026. An official Xbox store page still lists a free Akatori Demo for Xbox One, Series X|S, PC and handheld; availability can vary by region.
- Is there an official Akatori rune system?
- No official source checked here publishes rune slots, rune items, rune drops or a rune build. The “Akatori rune” query is routed to this staff and abilities evidence page without inventing a rune system.
